In Wolken migration is experienced as an act of deconstruction of memory and cultural heritage. The characters are trapped in a state of ‘regenerative nostalgia’ (Svetlana Boym), yet every attempt to recreate their traditions, routines and bonds fails miserably.
Driven by an inescapable instinct, the figures lose and find one another, like clouds, they clash and evade each other, swept along by the unstoppable momentum of migration.
At its core, the work seeks to explore human connection across time and space, the way in which we relate to the spectre of our past and the persistent sense of not belonging. The charactersare intertwined yet solitary; their paths cross only to go their separate ways: whether friends, siblings or lovers, they are destined to part ways in order to find a place – in the words of Hilde Domin – where one must be accepted with the blessing of the clouds.
