Gemma Hansson Carbone is an Italian-Swedish theatre director and performer. She has met and worked with renowned international artists and masters such as Theodoros Terzopoulos, Romeo Castellucci, Mixail Marmarinos, Rodrigo Garcia, Dead Center, Pavol Liska and Kelly Copper (Nature Theater of Oklahoma), Julie Stanzak (Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch), Chiara Guidi, Tomi Janezic, Fabrice Murgia, Willem Dafoe, and Elli Papakonstantinou (ODC Ensemble).
In 2015, she founded the company Naprawski, based in Gothenburg. Her works have been presented in over twelve countries across Europe and Asia. Since 2017, she has been supported by the Swedish National Art Council – Konstnärsnämnden.
Between 2022 and 2023, she was resident director for Eleusis 2023 – European Capital of Culture, where she curated and directed an interdisciplinary project between performing arts and archaeology, within the archaeological site of Eleusis. In 2023, she premiered her latest creation Die like a country, a transnational project on History and Landscape, based on the homonymous text by Dimitris Dimitriadis and Walter Benjamin’s essay Angelus Novus. Die like a country won the Premio Cervi – Festival della Memoria, received a Special Mention at Festival Presente Futuro 2023, and is a finalist of the Intercontinental Bienal 2024/2025. The project is supported by various international institutions, including the Italian Ministry’s Movin’Up program, Nordic Culture Point, and Culture Moves Europe.
