This work is a dive into the theatrical setting that follows a performer questioning his place on stage. Travelling through dance, spoken word texts and video projections, the soloist will explore some of the aspects of a dancer’s life, and the revolutions a body can know when put in the spotlight.
Threading scenes that narrate the act of manufacturing an image together with more theatrical and abstract scenes drawn from personal experiences, A Solo in the Spotlights travels through acts of compliance, disobedience, and rebellion with, towards and against the theatrical setting and the act of creating dance in non-sustainable ways.
A Solo in the Spotlights portrays the act of manufacturing an image on the performer, to then show the fractures this process may activate in the individual.
Referencing Richard Dyer’s studies on the reproduction of icons and Allen Ginsberg’s texts about inhabiting institutions and hierarchical structures, this piece wants to suggest new ways of facing the challenges of creating dance works.
Set in a stripped down and lo-fi atmosphere, this work is thought to subvert the theatrical setting: why is the performer moving? Who tells him what to do? What are the secret agreements the public is acting under?
The answers we seek might be under rays of artificial light, hiding in plain sight.
